presidents deskWhat is Leadership

What is leadership? How do you create leaders in your community? Many leaders that we know are born leaders. You see it through school. You see it in careers and you just know sometimes that someone is a born leader. There are also many people that you interact with daily that can be developed into a leader. We see that through our military in their training.

Morristown has always taken a special interest in developing the future leaders of our community through our Chamber Leadership Morristown program. This program creates opportunity to network, interact with, learn about, and develop your personal skills to becoming a future community leader, or a leader within your own organization. This program gives participants the opportunity to network with other similar minded future community leaders where skills can be developed to keep and retain those unseen leaders in our community.

Leadership is the opportunity to challenge oneself, to understand your personality and skill set, to learn how you work best with others. Leadership is the understanding that we were born with two ears and one mouth for a reason. I think that says a lot about listening twice as much as you speak. In my mind, a good leader is a good listener, a good communicator, a mediator that makes sure all parties end deals happy. A leader makes tough decisions that can sometimes be unpopular and that’s one thing our community has always experienced is that we have leaders that are willing to take risks and make the right decisions for our community as we push forward.

Hopefully you feel inspired enough that when you see the information on the Leadership Morristown program included in this Morristimes, you will consider applying for the program or encourage some of your employees to participate in the program. Leadership is very much like education, it is not suitable to think you can learn everything in one set number of years, but it takes a lifetime of education and leadership to truly be educated and to be a trained as a leader in a community.
