Reading is Key
If you have kids in the family like I do, I think you are likely hearing the “I’m ready for summer” cheers daily. While we all want our kids to enjoy a fun summer, I think now more than ever it is important that they are reading for a period of time every night. Our legislature has enacted some new laws requiring certain scores on standardized testing before a student can be passed from 3rd to 4th grade.
There are options like summer school to prevent that, but for many of us who book a vacation a year in advance, that creates an unknown with not many positive options. Sadly, we know most children’s school year is rarely reflected in one test but unfortunately, that is the decision that has been made at the state level. We want our community to excel and ensure our students continue moving on the correct path and that statistics are shocking and scary for children who are retained for just one year in school.
Our local school system is working hard to ensure our kids success, but we as parents and community leaders must also do our part. Remember, it won’t be long until these kids are your workforce and company leadership.
